Our History

Dedicated to the pursuit of excellence for over 67 years.

Est. 1955

Established in 1955 doing residential projects Robert A. Caya laid the foundation for Standard Drywall Inc. (SDI) to incorporate in 1983. Starting as a local subcontractor performing small wall and ceiling commercial projects for the general contracting community in the San Diego, CA market. By 1990 SDI was handling commercial projects while still maintaining a strong residential presence in Utah and Wyoming.

In May 2007, SDI added Jeff Miller to the executive leadership team, he was the co-founding partner of KHS&S Contractors West. With expansive knowledge in the wall and ceiling industry and particular fast-track complex design-assist projects throughout the Western United States, SDI's services grew to include an in-house "BIM" group engaged with most new projects.

2007

2011-2020

In October 2011, SDI acquired Capparelli Contracting Co., Inc., a California based commercial metal stud framing and drywall contractor with comprehensive technical knowledge, reputation, and experience focused on the healthcare industry. Ed Capparelli’s extensive experience includes complex projects that involve new hospital towers, operating rooms, retrofits, code upgrades, and OSHPD compliance, to name only a few.

Now fully implemented, we utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) – an intelligent process that helps us get the right information to the right people at the right time. It allows us to input critical information into the building model well before construction begins thereby minimizing waste and maximizing savings where possible. In an industry where our challenge is to deliver successful projects despite tight budgets, limited manpower, accelerated schedules, and inadequate or conflicting information, SDI’s use of BIM in conjunction with our experienced project teams allows us to deliver excellence.

With SDI’s massive growth in the 2000’s, Alicyn Taylor was brought on board as the CFO to tie together the finance operation across all 7 SDI locations.

In 2020 continuing efforts to streamline SDI brought Linnsey Caya in as General Counsel.

Today

67 years later, SDI has become a nationally recognized metal stud, framing, drywall, lath, and plaster subcontractor which is a direct result of our team's abilities to serve our client's growing needs. Engineering News Record (ENR) Magazine ranks SDI as one of the top five largest wall/ceiling contractors in the country. SDI's projects range from $10,000 to over $120 million, averaging approximately $345 million in annual revenue over the past three years. SDI’s proven track record of in-depth expertise with years of steady growth and acquisitions only serves to further enhance and boost what we put forward in our partnerships with clients – a full range of services and product lines, the qualities of integrity and dependability, our financial strength and creditworthiness and the highest standards in every facet of the project.

Geared with expansive knowledge in the wall and ceiling industry and in particular, fast-track design-assist projects throughout the western United States, SDI’s services grew to include design-assist and preconstruction services. We continue to invest in the future of our company and our clients.

SDI has grown to seven full-service regional office locations throughout the United States with the ability to bond single contracts in excess of $100 Million. On average, SDI has about 1,500 employees throughout the Western and Southern United States which gives us the advantage to mobilize project site office teams anywhere within the central, western and southern states efficiently and effectively, whether it be in a big city or remote area. Personnel from regional offices staff and manage these site offices, local craftsmen are hired to be part of the construction team and SDI’s executive team provides management oversight.

As our clients dictate and opportunities multiply, SDI continues to evaluate the need for establishing our next regional office in an effort to further our services. Our goal is simple – keep our costs competitive in today’s tough economy while continuing to provide outstanding service to our clients leaving our project owners with a finished project of the highest “Standard”.
